Pedro
Kouri Institute is a Cuban research institution
known worldwide because of both the numberless remarkable
results and the prizes obtained by its researchers.
Some
of its laboratories are
WHO / PAHO Collaborating Centres
and, at a national extent, it is the leading authority
in fields such as Microbiology, Parasitology, Tropical
Medicine, Clinical Infectology and epidemiology of Communicable
Diseases.
Founded
in 1937 by
Professor Pedro Kourí,
the international prestige IPK has gained is basically
based on the high qualification of its scientific personnel.
IPK's
facilities, located outside the City of Havana, extend
over an area of 77 000 square meters, 56 000 of which
are occupied by buildings and the rest are gardens and
parking lots.

Mission
To contribute
to improving the quality of life of the Cuban population
and the rest of the international community, offering
fast, specialized and Hi-Tech services in diagnostic
tests, medical care delivery, teaching as well as in
the development of research projects; focused on the
prevention, control and eradication of communicable
diseases.

Vision
We are
an institution with international scope, integrated
by competent, high-performance personnel, that continuously
improve its technology and services to face communicable
diseases and satisfy the needs of both the population
and its own workers.

Main Goals of IPK
To protect our population against communicable diseases, participating in the control and/or
eradication of these diseases.
To contribute to the development of the Biomedical Sciences, in general, and of Microbiology,
Parasitology and Epidemiology, in particular.
To offer, as a National Center for Clinical Reference, highly-qualified medical care to HIV/AIDS
patients and patients affected by any other communicable disease.
To keep scientific exchange with international institutions working on similar or related fields of
action.
To collaborate with Third World countries in the fight against tropical, infectious and/or parasitic
diseases.

Social object
1. To act as a
national reference laboratory for microbiology and
parasitology.
2. To act as a national reference center for medical
care and treatment of HIV patients.
3. To offer in- and outpatient medical care to the
population refered to the Tropical Medicine
Institute
4. To participate in calls made by international
organization or non-governmental organizations for
research finacing.
5. To offer epidemiological surveillance service for
communicable disease and vaccines.
6. To carry out validation and surveillance of Cuban
vaccine candidates and drugs, and of products
for vector and pest control.
7. To carry out field work for communicable disease
control, giving advice to the different health
levels about the hygienic-epidemiological situation and the
prevention of possible epidemic
outbreaks.
8. To act as a PAHO/WHO collaborating center for the
study of tuberculosis and dengue.
9. To develop research, medical care, and teaching
activities on infectious and parasitic diseases
with the participation of IPk's hospital and reference
laboratories.
10. To provide highly qualified medical services to
national patients and to foreign patients suffering
from diseases that can be introduced in the
country.
11. To develop and carry out investigations aimed at
the rapid control of infectious and
communicable diseases for the benefit of the both
the national and the regional health networks.
12. To offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses
(master's degree, doctorates, trainings, etc) to
professionals and technicians in the communicable
diseases field, as well as to the medical
brigades in internationalist missions as part of
the integral health program.
13. To sell medication, at retail prices, at the
institute's pharmacy in Cuban pesos to nationals and
in Cuban convertible pesos to foreigners.
14. To develop scientific software for their use
within the instituion and on the national public
health
network.
15. To act as the venue of national and
international scientific events such as congresses,
workshops, or other events modalities.
16. To offer non-tourist accommodation and
gastronomic services to foreign students who are
taking
any of the courses offered by the institution.
17. To offer canteen and cafeteria services to the
institution workers.
18. To offer transportation service to the
institution workers.
19. To offer medical care to tourists and foreign
patients.
